Practitioner Teacher Program

The Practitioner Teacher Program provides a certification option for applicants with a non-teacher education baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited university. The curriculum allows those interested in teaching to fulfill state requirements for certification in only one year. All coursework is 100% online.

Admission Requirements

  1. be accepted to the university;
  2. possess a baccalaureate degree from a regionally-accredited university and have an overall GPA of at least 2.5 on all undergraduate coursework;
  3. pass the following Core Academic Skills PRAXIS tests: Reading (5712), Writing (5722), and Math (5732). This requirement is waived for those who possess an ACT score of 22+ or SAT score of 1030+ or a master’s degree;
  4. pass PRAXIS II
  5. complete the admissions application to the Department of Education;
  6. demonstrate computer competency by passing a computer competency examination or successfully completing CMIS 1000;
  7. purchase professional liability insurance;
  8. purchase LiveText;
  9. complete confidentiality agreement;
  10. receive approval from the Department of Education faculty of completed application for entry into LSUA’s Practitioner Teacher Program: Grades K-12, Health and Physical Education.

Requirements for Completion
  1. Possess a grade point average of at least 2.5 in all coursework required for certification;
  2. pass PRAXIS II; Principles of Learning and Teaching; PLT 5622 for Elementary Certification; PLT 5623 for Middle Certification; PLT 5624 for Secondary Certification; World Languages Pedagogy 5841 for certification in French and Spanish;
  3. pass PRAXIS Teaching Reading 5204 (only candidates seeking elementary education certification that do not have 9 credit hours in Reading);
  4. complete all coursework (with a grade of "c" or higher in professional courses and complete all requirements.

When program completers have met all of the above criteria and completed all requirements, they are proposed to the Louisiana State Department of Education for certification in their chosen subject area.

Certification-Only Alternate Path Program: Grades K-12 (Health & Physical Education)

The Health and Physical Education Certification-Only Alternative Path Grades K-12 provides a certification option for applicants with a non-teacher education baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited university. The curriculum allows those interested in becoming health and physical education teachers and/or coaches to fulfill state requirements for certification through a prescribed set of courses.

Admission Requirements

  1. be accepted to the university;
  2. possess a baccalaureate degree from a regionally-accredited university and have an overall GPA of at least 2.5 on all undergraduate coursework;
  3. pass the following Core Academic Skills PRAXIS tests: Reading (5712), Writing (5722), and Math (5732). This requirement is waived for those who possess an ACT score of 22+ or SAT score of 1030+ or a master’s degree;
  4. pass PRAXIS II: Health and Physical Education Content (5857);
  5. complete the admissions application to the Department of Education;
  6. demonstrate computer competency by passing a computer competency examination or successfully completing CMIS 1000;
  7. complete background check with LSUA or with parish in which observation and participation requirements will be met (if not employed as a teacher);
  8. purchase professional liability insurance;
  9. purchase LiveText;
  10. complete confidentiality agreement;
  11. complete entry disposition (if not employed as a teacher);
  12. receive approval from the Department of Education faculty of completed application for entry into LSUA’s Certification-Only Alternate Path Program: Grades K-12, Health and Physical Education.

Requirements for Residency (EDCI 4940)

Applications for residency must be submitted to the Director of Clinical Practice no later than four weeks following the first day of classes in the semester prior to student teaching.  Late applications cannot be guaranteed consideration. Before being officially admitted to residency, students must meet the following criteria:

  1. possess a grade point average of at least 2.6 in all coursework required for certification;
  2. pass PRAXIS II: Principles of Learning and Teaching: K-6 (5622), or 5-9 (5623) or 7-12 (5624);
  3. complete all coursework (with a grade of “C” or higher in all professional courses) and complete requirements;
  4. complete 2 days a week/ 20 FEX hours in field placement school;
  5. complete Confidentiality Agreement
  6. purchase professional liability insurance;
  7. complete application for clinical practice;
  8. complete resident teacher application if not working as a teacher (as required by the State of Louisiana Department of Education).

Certification-Only Alternate Path Program: Grades 6-12 (Biology, Chemistry, English, Mathematics, Social Studies)

The Secondary Certification-Only Programs Alternative Paths in the fields of biology, chemistry, English, history, and mathematics are designed to offer potential applicants with a non-teacher education baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited university the opportunity to earn certification in their major area of study. The curriculum allows those interested in becoming secondary (6-12) teachers to take prescribed courses to fulfill state requirements for certification.

Admission Requirements

  1. be accepted to the university; 
  2. possess a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited university and have an overall GPA of at least 2.5 on all undergraduate coursework; 
  3. pass the following Core Academic Skills PRAXIS tests: Reading (5712), Writing (5722), and Math (5732). This requirement is waived for those who possess an ACT score of 22+ or SAT score of 1030+ or a master’s degree; 
  4. pass PRAXIS II - pass the secondary subject-specific examination for the content area(s) to be certified
    • Biology 5235
    • Chemistry 5245
    • English 5039
    • Math 5161
    • Social Studies 5086
    • If no examination has been adopted for Louisiana in the certification area, candidates must present a minimum of 31 semester hours of coursework specific to the content area;
  5. complete the admissions application to the Department of Education;
  6. demonstrate computer competency by passing a computer competency examination or successfully completing CMIS 1000;
  7. complete background check with LSUA or with parish in which observation and participation requirements will be met (if not employed as a teacher);

Certification-Only Alternate Path Program: Grades 1-5, Elementary Education

The Certification-Only Program Alternative Path Elementary Education is intended to allow potential applicants with a non-teacher education baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited university to earn their certification in elementary education.  The curriculum allows those interested in becoming elementary teachers (grades 1-5) to take prescribed courses to fulfill state requirements for certification.

Admission Requirements

  1. be accepted to the university; 

  2. possess a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited university and have an overall GPA of at least 2.5 on all undergraduate coursework;

  3. pass the following Core Academic Skills Praxis tests: Reading (5712), Writing (5722), and Mathematics (5732). The requirement is waived for those who possess an ACT composite score of 22+ or SAT score of 1030+ or who hold a master’s degree; 

  4. pass PRAXIS II-

    • Elementary Education Content Knowledge 5001 which is

      • Content Subtest Reading 5002 and

      • Content Subtest Math 5003 and

      • Content Subtest Social Studies 5004 and

      • Content Subtest Science 5005;

  5. complete the admissions application to the Department of Education;

  6. demonstrate computer competency by passing a computer competency examination or successfully completing CMIS 1000;

  7. complete background check with LSUA or parish in which observation and participation requirements will be met (if not employed as a teacher);

  8. purchase professional liability insurance;

  9. purchase LiveText;

  10. complete confidentiality agreement;

  11. complete entry disposition (if not employed as a teacher);

Add-on Certification in Significant Disabilities

The Department of Education currently offers courses that lead to add-on certification in Significant Disabilities. An add-on certificate allows someone with a valid teaching certificate to add additional areas of certification. Courses may be taken during the completion of a baccalaureate degree or an alternative certification program.

The Department of Education currently offers courses that lead to add-on certification in Special Education. An add-on certificate allows someone with a valid teaching certificate to add additional areas of certification. Courses may be taken during the completion of a baccalaureate degree or an alternative certification program.

In addition to completion of the designated 18 hours, applicants for special education certification must have passed PRAXIS exam 0543. Completion of the requirements for special education add-on certification in either of the areas noted above will qualify the completer to receive the Louisiana Board of Regents Post Baccalaureate Certificate for Special Education, Mild-Moderate, with certification to teach in the designated grade levels.
