LSUA staff and students joined in the 10th Annual Louisiana Dragon Boat Races hosted by the Alexandria Museum of Art this weekend on Lake Buhlow. Flanked by nearly thirty other teams, the staff of Generals Reaux and the students of LSUA Spitfire competed on the water for their chance at the coveted Champion’s Paddle.

Veteran rowers, alongside first-time participants, enjoyed a festive day of rowing, food, music, and fun. Though mercifully never matching up head-to-head, the LSUA student team posted quicker times than the staff in each of their three races. They finished 9th overall, while the staff team finished in 24th place. The students won runner-up for the "Best Dressed Team" for their Mario Brothers-themed costumes.

Annemart Kleijn, a sophomore tennis player from the Netherlands said, "I am glad I could experience a little Louisiana culture at my first Dragon Boat race. It was a lot of fun with the team. I got to know everyone better, and the team spirit was great!!! I can't wait for next year!"

LSUA’s Coordinator of Intramurals and Wellness, Caleb Funderburk, continued, "To see the students enjoying themselves in such a vibrant, festival atmosphere is the reason I love participating in the Dragon Boat races. We not only took home two trophies but also built a community and memories that will last a lifetime. The LSUA student team will definitely be back next year…aiming for the championship Paddle!"

“Our Generals Reaux team had a great day!” said Dr. Elizabeth Beard, Dean of the LSUA College of Liberal Arts and captain of the LSUA staff team. “We weren't the fastest boat by far, but our Dragon Boat participation was a win all the way around: fun, team building, school spirit, community, and support for AMoA. We are ready for next year!”
