Practitioner Teacher Program

Program Type:
The Practitioner Teacher Program provides a certification option for applicants with a non-teacher education baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited university. The curriculum allows those interested in teaching to fulfill state requirements for certification in only one year. All coursework is 100% online.


Admission Requirements

  1. be accepted to the university;
  2. possess a baccalaureate degree from a regionally-accredited university and have an overall GPA of at least 2.5 on all undergraduate coursework;
  3. pass the following Core Academic Skills PRAXIS tests: Reading (5712), Writing (5722), and Math (5732). This requirement is waived for those who possess an ACT score of 22+ or SAT score of 1030+ or a master’s degree;

  5. complete the admissions application to the Department of Education;
  6. demonstrate computer competency by passing a computer competency examination or successfully completing CMIS 1000;
  7. purchase professional liability insurance;
  8. purchase LiveText;
  9. complete confidentiality agreement;
  10. receive approval from the Department of Education faculty of completed application for entry into LSUA’s Certification-Only Alternate Path Program: Grades K-12, Health and Physical Education.

Requirements for Completion

  1. Possess a grade point average of at least 2.5 in all coursework required for certification;
  2. pass PRAXIS II; Principles of Learning and Teaching; PLT 5622 for Elementary Certification; PLT 5623 for Middle Certification; PLT 5624 for Secondary Certification; World Languages Pedagogy 5841 for certification in French and Spanish;
  3. pass PRAXIS Teaching Reading 5204 (only candidates seeking elementary education certification that do not have 9 credit hours in Reading;
  4. complete all coursework (with a grade of "c" or higher in professional courses and complete all requirements.

Request for Certification

When program completers have met all of the above criteria and completed all requirements, they are proposed to the Louisiana State Department of Education for certification in their chose subject area.
