Alexandria Museum of Art Opens EMERGE: New Orleans Artists from the Saratoga Collection
ALEXANDRIA, La. - The Alexandria Museum of Art’s new exhibition, EMERGE: New Orleans Artists from the Saratoga Collection, is now on view. Comprised of works created by artists living in New Orleans during the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the exhibition includes a variety of mediums including mixed media sculpture, film, paintings, and prints. The Saratoga Collection is the result of a partnership between artist/curator Terrence Sanders-Smith and architect/developer Marcel Wisznia. It is named after the downtown New Orleans apartment building in which it was housed from its inception until 2021, when it was generously donated to the Alexandria Museum of Art. Terrence Sanders-Smith, having childhood ties to the area, encouraged Marcel Wisznia to place the collection, alongside the Smith & Wisznia Collection, in a museum that would benefit from an influx of contemporary works.

The museum will host an opening reception for EMERGE: New Orleans Artists from the Saratoga Collection on Friday, November 7, from 6-8 p.m. Terrence Sanders-Smith and Adam Falik, author of the collection catalog and exhibition labels, will attend the opening reception and lead a special Curator’s Tour on Saturday, November 8, from 11:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. The tour is free and open to the public as a part of the museum’s Free Second Saturday Admission program.
