LSUA continues to expand its athletic department with the recent hire of a new women's tennis coach.

LSUA is pleased to announce the hiring of the Athletic Department’s first women’s tennis coach.  Melinda Descant will take the reins of the women’s tennis team in its inaugural season.

“We are excited to have someone so highly regarded in the Central Louisiana community as our first tennis coach,” says Athletic Director Charles Zeilman.  “She is passionate about getting this program of and running and we can’t wait to get started.”

Descant is a native and resident of Bunkie and is a graduate of Bunkie High School.  She attended LSUA for one year before receiving a four year tennis scholarship to the University of Southwestern Louisiana.  Before going to USL, she was ranked the number one tennis player in Central Louisiana.  While at USL, she was a four year letterman, team captain and also named to the All Southland Conference Team.

Since graduating from USL, Descant has served as both a teacher and tennis coach at Bunkie High School.  During her coaching career, she has had a two-time state champion in boy’s singles and a state runner-up girls’ team.

“Naturally, being a native of this area and having attended LSUA, it is even more meaningful to me.  I am excited that the university has the vision to expand its athletic program by including women’s tennis.  This is not only a new and exciting time for LSUA, but for me personally, to have been given the opportunity to be involved with this program from its inception,” says Coach Descant.  “This opportunity allows me to set high goals and standards for the tennis program and to follow through making sure they are all accomplished.  My desire is to develop as a coach and a person with these new athletes and to build this program to the standard I know it can be.”

Descant will start her new position at LSUA immediately and soon be formally introduced.
