Carlette Christmas knew she wanted to be a positive influence on people. Her commitment to inspiring others and not giving up on her dream has led her on some incredible adventures.

That passion and persistence is what she shared with a group of high school students participating in the Upward Bound summer program at LSU Alexandria recently.

“If you find what you are passionate about,” the Bunkie native said, “you will find your purpose.”

Mrs. Christmas is the host of On Point Talk, which airs weekdays on KAYT FM 88.1 in Alexandria. As a Southern University student studying mass communications, she had the opportunity to do an internship at WLS-TV, The Oprah Winfrey Show, in Chicago, Ill.

She recalls leaving central Louisiana “with a plane ticket and $250 in my pocket, but I did it believing in possibilities.”

During her internship, she stayed with family members of her then-boyfriend, David Christmas. By the end of her internship, she wanted to continue working with the show, but “Oprah told me I had to finish school.”

So, came back to Louisiana and completed her degree. During that time, though, she discovered that she did not want to be behind the camera. “My gift was to speak, and I was going to find a way to do that.”

She and her husband began the show one day a week, and in its four years of production, is now aired every weekday. On Point Live has featured segments with Dr. Oz, Leeza Gibbons, Mo’Nique, Soledad O’Brien, and others. She also had an interview recently with First Lady Michelle Obama.

“Our purpose is to encourage, uplift, and enlighten people every day” Mrs. Christmas said.

Her words of encouragement to the students were spoken from experience. “I was a first generation college student. I know it’s hard.”

“Sometimes being first is not easy,” she continued. “But when you find your passion and believe in possibilities, you will find your purpose.”
