The National Guard Tuition Exemption Program is an Legislative Exemption that provides for an award equal to the amount of a student's tuition only for current National Guard members that are in good standing with the National Guard and are in good academic standing with the university. 

LSUA receives a list of all eligible National Guard members each semester from the Louisiana National Guard. To notify the LSUA Financial Aid office that you are enrolled and wish to use your eligible exemption complete the LSUA National Guard Exemption Form. This form should be completed each semester or term you wish to use your exemption.

Students that do not have an exemption but believe that they are eligible should contact the LSUA Financial Aid Office via email at financialaid@lsua.edu.

This program provides financial support for education and housing to:

• Individuals with at least 90 days of aggregate military service on or after September 11, 2001
• Individuals discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days of military service

To qualify for this program, the individual must have received an honorable discharge from the military

The Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR&E) VetSuccess Program is authorized by Congress under Title 38, Code of Federal Regulations, Chapter 31.  It is sometimes referred to as the Chapter 31 program.  The VetSuccess program assists Veterans with service-connected disabilities to prepare for, find, and keep suitable jobs.  For Veterans with service-connected disabilities so severe that they can not immediately consider work, VetSuccess offers services to improve their ability to live as independently as possible.

Students must repeat these steps every semester to receive VA Chapter 31 Benefits

1. Contact a VA Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor at (318)676-3425
2. Meet with your LSUA Academic Advisor
3. Register for classes
4. Complete LSUA's VA Certification Data Form
5. Submit LSUA VA Certification Data Form to Financial Aid Office
6. Submit a copy of your approved Authorization VA Form 28-1905 to Financial Aid Office
7. Create your W.A.V.E. account to sign-up for Direct Deposit of VA funds

Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance is an education benefit for eligible spouses and children of certain veterans.  Eligible persons can receive up to 45 months of full-time or equivalent benefits to assist with the cost for:

• College, business, technical, or vocational courses; High School Diploma or GED; Independent Study or Distance Learning Courses
• Correspondence Courses (spouses only); Apprenticeship/On-the-Job Training
• Remedial, Deficiency, and Refresher Training (in some instances)
• The cost of tests for licenses or certifications needed to get, keep, or advance in a job

Requirements to Receive

To be eligible for Survivors' & Dependents' Education Assistance (VA Chapter 35) you must be the son, daughter, or spouse of:

• A veteran who died, or is permanently and totally disabled, as the the result of a service-connected disability.  The disability must be the result of active service in the Armed Forces
• A veteran who died from any cause while such service-connected disability was in existence
• A service member missing in action or captured in the line of duty by a hostile force
• A service member forcibly detained or interned in the the line of duty by a foreign government or power
• A service member hospitalized or receiving outpatient care for a VA determined service-connected permanent and total disability may be eligible for VA Chapter 35 benefits (Effective 12/23/2006)

Steps to Receive Benefits

Students must repeat steps 5 & 6 every semester to receive VA Chapter 35 Benefits

1. Call (318) 487-5743 to apply for benefits
2. If transferring from another institution - Complete the Change Place of Training Form
3. Meet with your LSUA Academic Advisor
4. Register for Classes as a full-time student (12 hours during Fall & Spring; 6 hours during a Summer)
5. Complete LSUA's VA Certification Data Form
6. If eligible for the Louisiana Title 29 Tuition Exemption:
   • If never applied, call (318) 487-5743 and speak with a counselor about applying
   • Bring an original copy of your Certificate of Eligibility to LSUA Financial Aid Office
   • Eligible students are exempt from paying tuition and school-imposed fees. Student-imposed fees are not exempt. This fee can be found HERE under the label "Mandatory fees". 
   • Meet and Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress each semester
     • Maintain a cumulative 2.0 GPA at the end of each semester
     • Earn 67% of hours attempted each semester
     • Have not cumulatively attempted more than 150% of the hours required to complete your current, primary degree programStudents must enroll full time to receive benefits
   • Students must enroll full time to receive benefits

The Montgomery GI Bill is available for those who enlist in the U.S. Armed Forces.  The Montgomery GI Bill encompasses both the Montgomery GI Bill-Active Duty (Chapter 30).  Under VA Chapter 30, active duty military members enroll and pay $100 per month for 12 months; and are then entitled to receive a monthly education benefit once they have completed a minimum service obligation.

Chapter 1606 Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserve

This is an education program that provides up to 36 months of education benefits to members of the Selected Reserve.  This includes the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard Reserves, as well as the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard.  It is the first program that doesn't require a person to serve on active duty in the regular Armed Forces to qualify.

The Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts (MyCAA) Program is an employment assistance program that provides up to $4,000 of financial assistance to eligible military spouses who are pursuing a license, certification or Associate’s degree in a portable career field and occupation.
