English, History, & Humanities (ENHH)

The Department of English, History, & Humanities has an energetic and diverse faculty who nurture over 150 majors from varied degree programs. ENHH also helps students meet the general education requirements necessary for graduation. The Department gives students the opportunity to study with dedicated teachers, most of whom publish in their fields. Because of our highly approachable teachers and generally small class sizes, students benefit from personal attention and from opportunities for research and publishing. Students at LSUA enjoy learning environments that encourage them to think critically and express themselves effectively.

LSUA Student Returns Home From Exchange Program

History major studies in Canada during spring semester.

While most students are scurrying around to finish up final exams, LSUA senior Julie Borrel is relaxing and enjoying her time back in Louisiana. Borrel, a history major from Marksville, recently finished a thirteen-week stint in Corner Brook, Newfoundland at the Grenfell Campus of Memorial University. Participating in the National Student Exchange program, Borrel chose to spend a semester abroad and take three history courses at the Canadian university.

“I mainly chose Grenfell because of the scenery. The mountains are beautiful. As soon as I saw the pictures, I knew that’s where I wanted to go. Then, Dr. Wilson helped me through the process, and just three weeks later, I was accepted to the university.”

Borrel chose to enroll in Medieval Europe, Classical Greece, and War and Society in Modern Canada. Each of the courses were interesting to her, but her favorite was the War and Society in Modern Canada, mainly because of the professor.

“Dr. Keshan was an excellent teacher. He taught the course in a very engaging manner which made the class fun and interesting.”

Another one of Borrel’s favorite things about her experience, was the scenery. The mountains, the reason she chose to attend Grenfell, exceeded her expectations. Not only did she enjoy the scenery, but also the air quality, which she said was crisp and fresh. And as one might imagine, she did experience some very artic weather.

“February was a hard month. There was a blizzard almost every day and it was freezing. I did get a little lonely during that time.”

Despite the outside conditions, Borrel had a pretty nice setup which allowed her to not deal with the weather very often. Her dorm and classrooms were all in the same building so she did not have to wade through snow on a daily basis.

While Julie was sad for her experience to come to an end, she returned home on April 24th feeling like a different person.

“I am a different Julie. I am more mature. I feel like I can accomplish more all while appreciating home a little bit more. I am so glad that I took advantage of this because I know these types of opportunities don’t happen every day.”
