Points of Pride

Louisiana State University at Alexandria (LSUA) benefits from many distinctive and enviable characteristics. The following are selected “points of pride” that offer insights into the many contributions made by LSUA in fulfilling its mission, goals, and objectives in an exemplary fashion.

  • LSUA is a public institution of higher education that is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, Inc.(SACSCOC) to award associate and baccalaureate degrees.
  • In addition to regional accreditation, LSUA has specialized accreditation as follows:
    • Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN)
    • National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS)
    • Joint Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT)
    • American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP)
    • National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE)
  • All academic courses and programs offered by LSUA are developed, approved, and delivered by LSUA faculty and approved by the LSUA Board of Supervisors and the Louisiana Board of Regents.
  • All LSUA students must complete a well-considered, coherent, and approved general education core of courses to earn an associate degree or a baccalaureate degree from LSUA.
  • LSUA provides an excellent foundation for and entry to advanced academic courses, programs, and degrees provided at other institutions of higher education (both public and private).
  • LSUA delivers rigorous, challenging, and high quality academic courses and programs in traditional formats as well as through distance learning (via synchronous and asynchronous formats).
  • LSUA has an outstanding Honors Program that is designed to provide an enriched learning experience for academically gifted and talented students that provides the opportunity for growth experiences and interactions with exceptional faculty and other students of similar ability and desire to excel now and throughout their lives.
  • LSUA offers its students a first-rate ROTC program that provides participants with an array of leadership development opportunities and a rock solid foundation for the future. It also offers student with an array of scholarships and other support. ROTC graduates receive a commission and may serve as an officer in the Army Active Duty Forces, U.S. Army Reserves, or the Army National Guard.
  • Faculty members at LSUA are experts in their respective academic fields or areas; are engaged actively in teaching, research and creative expression, and service; and are committed to helping students survive, thrive, achieve, and graduate from LSUA; and excel thereafter.
  • LSUA faculty members provide excellent role models for and advice to students with regards to academic program enrollment (majors and minors), course selection, course sequencing, and completion; achieving academic success; personal and professional development; post baccalaureate studies and credentialing; professional employment; and other important matters.
  • Staff members and administrators at LSUA are first-rate and dedicated to their supporting roles in the efficient and effective operation and administration of the University.
  • LSUA has had an unbroken ten year history of unqualified opinions of its audited financial statements and has acted in other exemplary ways to be fiscally responsible and to protect and use its financial resources prudently, efficiently, and effectively.
  • A recent economic impact study [1] conducted by LSU shows that LSUA employs approximately 290 full-time employees and generates about $52.7 million in sales, $17.6 million in earnings, and about 640 jobs within the central region of the State.
  • LSUA contributes significantly to the regional economy through direct and indirect campus-based faculty and staff jobs and provides a pipeline of highly qualified new employees that enter continuously the job market.
  • LSUA plays a vital role in educating future community leaders that creates an incentive for businesses to locate and remain in central Louisiana and for the creation of new businesses by LSUA graduates.
  • Highly trained financial aid counselors at LSUA help students to obtain financial aid from an array of sources (e.g., federal, state, institutional, the LSUA Foundation, and other sources) to provide access to educational opportunity and achieve academic success with the lowest possible debt burdens upon graduation.
  • Students at LSUA have the opportunity to enjoy the full college experience, both within and outside of the classroom.
  • Students at LSUA benefit by attending small classes (with an overall student to faculty ratio of 15 students to 1 faculty member); thereby, enabling students to develop strong and positive bonds with faculty members and other students.
  • The LSUA Foundation supports actively and admirably LSUA and provides funding (through endowments and/or immediate use funds) for scholarships, professorships, endowed chairs; academic and support facilities; instructional and research equipment; and for other good and appropriate purposes.
  • Officers and members of the LSUA Foundation contribute extensively and selflessly their wealth, work, and wisdom to provide a level of excellence at LSUA not otherwise possible with legislative appropriations and tuition and fees.
  • LSUA’s Alumni Association members and officers support actively their alma mater via philanthropic contributions, sage advice and counsel, assistance with student recruiting, helping enrolled students and other alumni with job placements and career advancement, and in countless other ways.
  • As a consequence of having its own properly staffed and well trained police force and an excellent crime prevention program, LSUA is one of the safest and most secure campuses in the United States.
  • LSUA’s technology infrastructure is state-of-the art and includes high speed internet connectivity, Wi-Fi hotspots throughout campus (both inside and outside of buildings), and a number of excellent computer labs.
  • LSUA has a picturesque campus comprised of approximately 220 acres of land that is co-located with the LSU Agricultural Center providing a total footprint of approximately 3,433.3 acres of land dedicated and used for academic purposes.
  • The LSUA campus contains a substantial number of mature and magnificent live oak trees (many of which are over 100 years) adding dignity, warmth, and distinctiveness to the University.
  • LSUA operates the Alexandria Museum of Art in downtown Alexandria in conjunction with its commitment to serving the educational and cultural needs and interests of central Louisiana and in forging and sustaining excellent town and gown relationships.
  • More than 20 student organizations and clubs provide wholesome co-curricular and extra-curricular opportunities for students seeking the complete university experience, while fostering the establishment of life-long friendships.
  • Intercollegiate athletic competition at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletic (NAIA) level is available in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) for athletically gifted men (i.e., baseball, basketball, and soccer) and athletically gifted women (basketball, soccer, and tennis) at LSUA.
  • LSUA’s Fitness Center provides an excellent venue for aerobic exercise, strength and conditioning, swimming, and other related fitness activities that is supported by walking, jogging, bicycle trails on the LSUA campus.There is also a nine-hole golf course located on the main campus.
  • Classified by U.S. News and World Report as a National Liberal Arts College, LSUA is listed as:

    • Among the top ten least expensive public universities for nonresident students (“U.S. News Short List,” July 2013)
    • LSUA is among the top 20 percent of colleges, universities, and trade schools in the country to be named by Victory Media as a Military Friendly School.
    • LSU of Alexandria is a StormReady University as designated by the National Weather Service, Lake Charles. StormReady communities are better prepared to save lives during times of severe weather due to an emergency operations center, two or more ways to alert the public to severe weather warnings, weather monitoring systems, holding community seminars and having a hazardous weather plan.
    • LSU of Alexandria has been named as a 2013 Tree Campus USA thanks to the university’s dedication to promoting healthy trees and engaging students and staff in the spirit of conservation. LSUA has met five standards to earn this distinction including the establishment of a tree advisory committee, a tree-care plan, a dedication to a campus tree program, Arbor Day observance and sponsorship of student service-learning projects.
    • Alexandria Museum of Art is Nationally Accredited with the American Alliance of Museums.Nationwide, only 41% of art museums are accredited and only 16% of museums associated with colleges and universities are accredited. AMoA is one of 12 accredited museums in the state of Louisiana. Within the Southwestern Museums Conference of which AMoA is a member, only 24% of museums are accredited.
