Various actors and artists will honor the late Richard Gwartney by performing snippets from the numerous plays and musicals he directed over his career City Park Players and at LSUA.
Twenty-seven shows will be represented with 24 actors performing. Most of the actors are recreating the roles they played when the shows were originally performed.
Performances begin on Thursday, July 24 with tickets at $10. The Friday night performance on July 25 is priced at $25 per ticket. Saturday, July 26, tickets are $50 and include a champagne reception to be held after the show. All shows begin at 7:30pm and are in the Richard Gwartney Theatre located in Mulder Hall at LSUA.
Proceeds from the event will go toward to the creation of the Richard Bryan Gwartney Endowed Professorship at LSUA.
Richard Gwartney was an LSUA Associate Professor of Theatre and Communication Studies. Additionally, he served as the managing and artistic director for the City Park Players from 1986-1997. Over that span, he produced, directed, or acted in more than 140 plays, musicals, operas and theatre for younger audiences.
In addition to working with Alexandria’s City Park Players and LSUA’s Empty Space Players, Gwartney also worked with the LSU Theatre, Red River Opera, LSU Opera Theatre, Children’s Opera Theatre of Baton Rouge, American Theatre Company of Tulsa, OK, Press Club of Central Louisiana and the Cotton Patch Players among others.
Gwartney passed away in November 2011.
